The new hard and extra-hard high speed steel M2-R35 and M2-R42 are the Cobalt-free high speed steel products invented by Prof. Qi Zhengfeng, the national renowned expert in the field of metal material and heat treatment. This invention has earned the national invention award.

At present, M2 is still the chief material for high speed steel cutting tool in China, though internationally it has already been eliminated and replaced by expensive Cobalt high speed steel and powder high speed steel in order to meet the requirements of the machining center. The new Cobalt-free high-speed steel has the same performance with Cobalt high speed steel M35 and M42, yet much cheaper than the latter. Moreover, its technical performance is far better than the Cobalt free extra hard high-speed steel M2Al developed 30 years ago in China.
